LONG ROAD
Rolling down, rolling down
This dusty old road
Pull into pull into
Another rusty old town
Along the way
One night stand
One horse town
You pour it on
And you pour it out
You make them laugh
And you make them shout
You make them cry
And you make them feel
The road home is long
I'll be missing you

The Story Behind the Song "Long Road"
We're crossing the United States, Lon and I, driving in a car to California. I love crossing the country by car because there is so much to see, hear, and feel. So many different little towns. For us...one night stands, one horse towns. As musicians we do quite a bit of travelling. It's funny how you can pull into a little town that seem so lifeless and dead, having virtually no sound. And within an hour, Lon can have a restaurant or bar up and alive again with his sense of humor and enthusiasm.
I have many memories of us pulling into little gas stations in the middle of the U.S. looking to get some gas and end up hanging around to party with the locals. We have also always had a way with accoustic music, with me playing a guitar and singing and Lon on piano. I feel that music can be a great healer for a town or community that need a lift.
You pour it on; you pour it out; you make them laugh; you make them shout; you make them cry; and you make them feel. The road is long.
In the beginning while writing the song I kept seeing an idea for the video. It starts with the band on a tour bus, touring the country, heading towards their next show. Later that afternoon they pull into a town that seems to be a ghost town. Nothing is going on. No cars, no people, no animals, no lights. After checking the road map, this seems to be the place where they should be. The band flips a coin, and they decide they will stay.
The band starts to unload the equipment, and setting up the gear, and getting ready to do a show. They figure if they're going to hang around for a while, they might as well get off the bus for a while and make some noise. Halfway through the first song funny things begin happening in the area. Children begin to appear. Dogs can be heard barking. Down the block there are two women fighting over the same dress at the department store. People come from nowhere, begin to hang out, begin to dance, and sing and come alive. We don't know where these folks are coming from, or where they've been. But this town is alive.
As a singer in the band, I get to see the look in people's faces when I sing about something that they are going through, or I sing about something they've felt. Being able to experience that and share that with them, makes the long road , for me, worth it.
