HEAVEN

He called her heaven
She was as dark as the earth and clay.
His mother said, son don't do it.
You're white, she's black
It's just not our way.
She called him loverboy
He held the world in her eyes
To her there was no other
His love made her realize

Love has the power to hold
Love has the power to hold
Hold us strong, hold us strong,
Love has the power to hold

Mama sat son upon her knee
Said son you listen to me
Hear my words
Oh hear my words
Believe what you know
Not what you see
Father said Son see these bars
See the man
I'm doing time with this here bottle
This thing is stronger than I am

Love has the power

The Story Behind the Song "Heaven"

Love has the power to hold.

There are some times when things happen in life, and if not for the power of love things may have turned out differ- ently. It's that feeling of big arms wrapped around us, that sometimes saves us. Being able to witness a love so strong is incredible. To bear witness to a love so strong can be amazing, whether it is you or someone else.

He called her heaven.

She was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. He thought she must have come from heaven because she looked like an angel. She was as dark as the earth and clay. They knew that in the late 1950's there was little acceptance of interracial relationships. His family and hers urged them not to pursue thier love. She called him loverboy. He held the world in her eyes. To her there was no other. His love made her realize.

Love has the power to hold.

Mama sat son up on her knee. Said, "Son,listen to me. Believe in what you know, not what you see,"placing her hand on her heart.

No one would believe that a year earlier her husband was killed out in the field in a tractor accident. She had to take care of three kids, and not fall apart. The three children all worked jobs, as did thier mother, but they were determined to stay together and keep thier lives.

Love has the power of hold.

Father said, "Son, see these these bars. See the man. I'm doing time with this here bottle. This thing is stronger than I am."

Brave words from a man who hadn't seen his son in fifteen years. The young man had grown to believe he didn't even have a father, then one day the phone rang, and he was reminded. So his father had nobody, and his one phone call from prison prompted a family reunion. The young man went down to the jail. He didn't remember his dad as a bad father, just an absent one. The son decided to post bail, spend the day with his father, and try again.
